Title: One Plus One
Author: JoJo Moyes
Synopsis: After being left with her ex-husband’s son and her daughter a few years ago, Jess has been trying to make ends meet. Her ex isn’t providing child support and she’s working a few different jobs but still falling behind. When her daughter (Tanzie) is offered a scholarship to the prestigious St. Anne’s school, she struggles to find a way to pay for the remainder of the amount, until she sees a math competition in Scotland, that if won, would cover the amount. Now they just have to figure out how to get there.
Ed has gotten used to his life as a corporate success, until he sleeps with the wrong woman and makes a decision that he’s still kicking himself for. He’s hiding out from the press when he finds himself offering to drive Jess and the kids to Scotland. He immediately regrets it.
Will they make it to the competition in time? And will Tanzie be able to win?
Quote: “The law of probability combined with the law of large numbers states that to beat the odds, sometimes you have to repeat an event an increasing number of times in order to get you to the outcome you desire. The more you do, the closer you get. Or… basically, sometimes you just have to keep going.”
Review: This story was easy to get through and entertaining- perfect for reading at lunchtime and before bed! I love how quirky Moyes’ characters are and her tone of writing. While this wasn’t quite as enjoyable as Me Before You, it was a nice read and it has been really great to find another prolific author that you can always turn to! After going through most of Jodi Picoult’s books I was looking for another author, and while Moyes isn’t as hard-hitting, she’s certainly enjoyable.
